LAST Wednesday, I wrote about Senator Tito Sotto’s demand -- to pull out the reported $63-million worth of advertising spots of the Department of Tourism (DOT) on international news channel Cable News Network (CNN), after it aired a documentary on “pagpag.” The special feature was seen worldwide and illustrated poverty and hunger in the country through “pagpag” (or leftover chicken scavenged from garbage by the poor – washed, recooked, and sold to poor Filipinos).
Sotto said the Philippines was stabbed in the back, after the Philippine government poured a lot of money to advertise with CNN. He argued that the network should have just shown success stories (like Sen. Manny Villar overcoming poverty through hardwork) or stories that depict the country in a good light.
