Sometimes, great things may happen when you least expect them.
So when I was invited by Romeo Joven, a producer, to see the show of Joey Albert have any expectations. And to my surprise, it was definitely a wonderful and memorable experience.
The opening act was a variety of performers, who all did an amazing job. The show continued on to honor Joey Albert and her 30th year anniversary in the music industry.
During the 80s, I didn’t get to listen to many of her songs, because I was already here in the US.
However, I was amazed by the purity, gentleness, and mellow nature of her voice.
Hearing her perform yet again brought me back to my younger days, especially the music from Sergio Mendez and those memorable Bossa Nova classics.
I was able to make eye contact with her, because I was singing along and feeling her music. She brought me back to my good old days, which is possibly why I could thoroughly relate to her and her music.
She definitely immortalized some of the most beautiful songs of the 70s, such as “Tell Me” and “Iisa Pa Lamang” (meaning “there’s only one”), among her many hits. Although I’ve seen her sing before, this was my first time to have the complete “the Joey Albert” experience.
Hats off to FASO and Maestro Bob Shroder, who lovingly supported her in a couple of memorable numbers.
The crowd rose to their feet during her disco segment, dancing along with her music.
I feel as though her style of music is more relaxing and heartfelt than the music of today, which is more over-the-top, shouting (birit) and showy.
Her words related to her own personal memories and experiences throughout her career. These narrations of her musical journey were spoken very eloquently.
The next day, she asked her producer about me, because she felt my energy during the show. We were introduced at Noypitz Restaurant and she told me excitedly that she was asking about me. She told me that she felt a connection with me, because of how I sang along and because of the emotion that I expressed. Even though I was in the audience, she could see that I, specifically, was enjoying her music.
She described our eye contact as a “connection through music,” as I told her that hearing her sing was a “breath of fresh air.”
Since 1982, she has accomplished so much, including successful concerts throughout Asia and the United States. She was given recognition for her vocals in the Tinig Awards, Cecil Awards, and Awit Awards. Her plan for the near future is to do charity works by reaching out to OFWs all over Europe in hopes that she may bring joy and happiness through her music.
To you, Joey: it is a pleasure knowing you and may you have a long-lasting career. You are unique and you have a beautiful heart. God Bless and more power to you!
