Literature

(In lieu of my column  article, I am featuring my son, Heaven Arespacochaga’s school essay on the importance of literature. As parents, we may learn a thing or two from the perspective of a 15-year-old teenager.)

Why in the world should I read and study literature? Will I need it in real life? “Bad language is a stage all children go through, and it dies with time, when they learn they’re not attracting attention with it.” (Lee 78).

Pursuing your dream

WE all aspired to be “something” when we were little.  

My brother wanted to be a star athlete, my son wants to be a professional basketball player, and I wanted to be an artist.  My friend wanted to be a lawyer and another friend is still dreaming of starting her own business and getting out of her deadbeat “job.”

New Year’s resolution or dissolution?

We always come up with a “resolution” at the beginning of the year.  And while most of us commit to seeing our resolutions fulfilled, there are some of us who fall off the wagon, get discouraged and allow our resolutions to become dissolutions.

I’m no expert in keeping my resolutions.  As a matter of fact, I’ve broken so many resolutions, I’m surprised I still come up with my list every year.

Begin with the end in mind

I was having a nice conversation with my little boy, Heaven, on how we can improve our character or personality.  There was one thing that came to mind and I didn’t mind refreshing my son’s memory about Stephen R. Covey’s book 7 Habits of Highly Effective Individuals.

The one habit that really got both of us excited was habit # 2, which was “Begin with the end in mind.”
