Veronica Louise Mendoza

Veronica Louise C. Mendoza, 12, is an 8th grader at St. Joseph’s Sacred Heart Schools in Atherton and was named 2010 TIME Kid Reporter. She appears on ‘V’s Log’ on ‘Adobo Nation’ shown over TFC. She believes that culture is key to knowing who you are. Her dream is to be a professional reporter and host and she hopes to inspire others.

About a week ago, I had the very special honor of becoming a godmother of two of the cutest babies alive. Becoming a godmother has essentially changed my life and made me look at the miracle of life at a different perspective. As an almost fourteen-year-old girl, I knew that I had taken up an incredible amount of responsibility by accepting this undeniable request. Once I received that phone call, I was both a bit nervous and excited about what would happen.

Inner Voices: Adversity to diversity

The San Mateo County Library and the Filipino American Association of Foster City team up with the Literacy Initiatives International Foundation to present Inner Voices: Adversity to Diversity, an event that explores cultural, racial, and generational issues. This event will feature world-renowned authors Tess Uriza Holthe, Pati Navalta Poblete, and Janet Stickmon.

Tess Uriza Holthe is the author and excellent storyteller of When Elephants Dance. This novel features on-the-edge life experiences exchanged by neighbors while being concealed in a cellar to escape the heinous torture from the Japanese officials during World War II in the Philippines. When Elephants Dance has won a 2007 National and SF Chronicle’s #1 Bestseller. Holthe’s second book, The Five Forty-Five to Cannes, tells a story that focuses on an exchange of destiny and coincidence in the lives behind the surface of train passengers. The Five Forty-Five to Cannes, also won prizes such as the San Francisco Chronicle and ALA Notable Book of 2007.

‘In Her Mother’s Image’

In Her Mother’s Image by Cecilia Gaerlan is a novel that is set in World War II in the Philippines. Consuelo and Chiquita, a mother and daughter, are stuck inside a maze of longing and hatred in a world of war. Eight-year-old Chiquita watches the war through her eyes and also witnesses an act of betrayal from her mother. This unforgivable act reappears thirty years later when Chiquita returns to her homeland to face the monster that gave her a lifelong of great pain—her very own mother.

Cecilia Gaerlan is a playwright from Berkeley, California. She has won many awards for her writing, including an Honorable Mention in the Stage Play Script Category of the Annual Writer’s Digest Writing Competition in 2005 for The Hand of God and in 2010 for Magnus Laurent. She is known for writing her plays about many other topics, including child prostitution, the United Nations, and the Chinese Cultural Revolution.

Pinoys in America—Their Voice

In our community today, there have been many Fil-Ams making a name for themselves through the media. The most recent discovery is Gemma Nemenzo and Lorenzo Paran III, authors who had a dream of living in America, while also finding their way back to their roots.

The Literacy Initiatives International Foundation present to you a talk with these authors. The event will be on July 16 at the Daly City Public Library at Serramonte.

Dream Big, Little Pig!

You’ve witnessed her win gold medals, you’ve seen her dance moves on Dancing With the Stars, and now you’re going to see her write! Kristi Yamaguchi, a mother, a former Olympic gold medalist, and much more, has added children’s author to her list. Dream Big, Little Pig! is Yamaguchi’s most recent success. This picture book is about Poppy, a fanciful pig, who dreams of being in the spotlight. Poppy creates a series of trials and errors until she discovers her passion for ice skating. I recently chatted with Kristi Yamaguchi, the author of this lovely new children’s book: Dream Big, Little Pig!
