The late Philippine President Ramon Magsaysay was a well-loved leader for his simplicity, humility and passion for justice. The Ramon Magsaysay Award was created in 1957, the year when he died in a plane crash. Just like the beloved Magsaysay, the award is given to persons—regardless of race, nationality, creed or gender—who address issues of human development in Asia with courage and creativity. This year’s awardees paint a portrait of remarkable change their contributions which have transformed their societies for the better.

As the great Buddha once said, "every human being is the author of his own health or disease." The issue of health has become even more relevant during these trying times, especially with the much-debated health care overhaul being presented by Pres. Barack Obama. Nevertheless, The Asian Journal MDWK Magazine lightens things up by focusing the spotlight on the opposite side of the spectrum -- people like Aurora Salve, who started out in the glam of showbiz but chose to embrace a quieter life and a noble cause by working in the health care industry.

The American Center of Philippine Arts’ (ACPA) mission to lead young Filipinos in America to knowing their roots is admirable. With so many distractions and less informational activities that gear towards our culture and history, they might find themselves losing their identity. We believe history is inextricably linked to one’s identity. For if you don’t know your history, where you came from, then who are you?

A hero is defined as someone who shows courage, one who will give up his life so another could live. Ninoy Aquino did both and more—he lived his entire life fighting for his countrymen. He sacrificed a lot of things, even time with his family, to fight off a dictatorship. Even when he was in exile, he continued to tirelessly educate his countrymen and stood up for what he believed in—that the Filipino is worth dying for
