Language of the Filipino soul

Language of the Filipino soul

Famous dancer and choreographer Martha Graham once said, "Dance is the hidden language of the soul." This is true because when dancers perform, their movements not only represent twists, turns, steps or leaps, but a more innate ability to tell a story—a story of their history, heritage and culture. Hiyas Philippine Folk Dance Company has created to convey this message in their performances, and continues to broaden the community’s perspective about the Philippines and its people—and in this case, speaks the language of the Filipino soul. Good Food, Good Health

Good Food, Good Health

The adage "you are what you eat" still holds true. And who wouldn’t be tempted to savor exquisite, sumptuous food, especially the ones prepared by gourmet chefs like Cecilia de Castro and Wolfgang Puck. But indulging yourself doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to give up on being healthy -- and that’s where we strike a balance in this week’s issue. The Asian Journal MDWK Magazine brings you a reprise of our food issue -- this time to explore different passions -- a passion for food, good company and good health. Bon appetit!

Art and its meaning

Art and its meaning

Any great work of art revives and re-adapts time and space. The measure of its success is the extent to which it makes it reach and educate the people who view it. Jenifer Wofford’s piece and her passion to teach teaches us more than art. It draws us to think, to question and transcends us to a different level as a person. AJ

The Spice of Life

The Spice of Life

According to William Gilmore Simms, "Genius is the very eye of intellect and the wing of thought; it is always in advance of its time, and is the pioneer for the generation which it precedes." And indeed, Sammy Lorenzana, Jr. is among the few who, despite the odds, courageously did great things ahead of their time. The Pioneer Importer of Philippine Products, Sammy Lorenzana, Jr. adds spice to life by becoming an inspiration to his kababayans here in the United States. The Asian Journal MDWK Magazine brings you his savory story -- one that will leave you with a mouthful of valuable lessons in life and love.

Go East AJ!

Go East AJ!

Whoever said 'East is East and West is West and never the twian shall meet?'*

With this issue, the Asian Journal celebrates the life and style of the Filipinos in the east coast, particularly New York & New Jersey. But this exciting weekly journey does not stop in Manhattan, Queens or the Jersey Shores. Our reportage knows no borders. We go wherever we celebrate the Filipino Life and Style in America. This time we’re headed east & beyond. Aptly called LifeEASTyle, this is where East meets best—the best in our arts and culture, events, entertainment and the exciting people and Pinoys who inhabit this lovely planet.
