Monterey Park pledges its commitment to electrical safety awareness as a ‘powerful city’

ROSEMEAD, Calif. — City leaders and community groups gathered at Monterey Park City Hall last week as the city pledged its commitment to electrical safety awareness during National Electrical Safety Month. Marissa Castro-Salvati, Southern California Edison’s (SCE) local public affairs region manager, presented a “Powerful City” certificate of proclamation to Mayor Anthony Wong.

“Electrical safety is very important because we all use electricity,” said Wong. “Monterey Park is 98 years old, and as long as the city has been here, we’ve been working together with SCE. I really appreciate what SCE has been doing for public safety since that is the greatest concern for the people of Monterey Park and elsewhere around the world.”

SCE is partnering with Monterey Park and two community organizations — the Asian Youth Center and Chinatown Service Center — to increase awareness about electrical safety and encourage residents to take the safety pledge. Past outreach events include the SCE electrical safety booth at the Cherry Blossom Festival in April and the San Gabriel Fire Department Emergency Preparedness community event last Sunday. SCE will also host the booth this Saturday during the Play Days Carnival, Monterey Park’s annual birthday celebration.

“The city of Monterey Park is unique given the demographics that it has in terms of the population, particularly the Chinese population,” said Castro-Salvati. “It’s important not only to provide customers with electrical safety information, but also to provide the opportunity to learn about electrical safety in their own language, and that way they are able to identify and understand the material better.”

Visitors to the SCE booth at past events have found the SCE Electrical Safety Starter Kit to be helpful. The kit provides tips on how to stay safe around electricity and emergency preparedness guides that are in English, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Cambodian and Spanish. The kits also include a collapsible water bottle, downed power-line magnet and flashlight.
