The NAFP (National Association  of Filipino Priests, USA) is an association that promotes unity, support, and growth among Filipino priests ministering with their cultural gifts by serving as a forum for collaboration and effective pastoral leadership. To date, there are about 900 Roman Catholic Filipino priests serving in different capacities in the US Church. For the most part, they serve as pastors and associate pastors of parishes all over the country. They also serve in leadership capacities in the dioceses. The National Assembly will be held on November 8-11, 2011 here in Los Angeles with the theme, “Paring Pinoy: Celebrating Our Gifts.” In preparation for the upcoming assembly, the Asian Journal will be featuring  Roman Catholic Filipino priests who are serving different capacities here in the United States.

Rev. Fr. Reynaldo Bonite Matunog, JCL, Adjutant Judicial Vicar, Archdiocese Of Los Angeles

Rev. Fr. Reynaldo Bonite Matunog, JCL, Adjutant Judicial Vicar, Archdiocese Of Los Angeles

“I FIND fulfillment as a priest when I serve and minister to the people, the faithful, whose marriages and status in life before the Church need help. I believe in this ministry of justice, truth, healing and reconciliation, for even though truth might be difficult, it is what it is, that some folks are not meant to be married. Through the annulment process in the Church, we find what really happened, it is not to pinpoint the blame, but when the whole truth is known by the parties, while painful, truth can become a source of joy [later on]. The annulment, a closure to painful chapters of lives, can be the beginning of healing, and folks can move on.” – Fr. Reynaldo Matunog, 2011

His last name means resonant and vibrant. And such was the early life of Fr. Reynaldo Matunog who comes from a family of eight siblings, along with devout churchgoer Suprema S. Bonite, his mom and his father, Melecio G. Matunog, Sr.

Rev. Fr. Anthony Carreon Vocation Director, Claretian Philippine Province

“BECAUSE of the mining, the roads are so rough on the way from Carrascal to Cantilan [Surigao del Norte], there are no trees, there are no people, and there are no cell sites.  Ang tulisan ay nakapila, malapit sa dagat, naghihintay sila.  Yet, somehow I escape the queue of the robbers [be able] to spread the good news.” - Fr. Anthony Carreon, 2011

Every year, Immaculate Heart of Mary’s parishioners look forward to the early morning homilies of Fr. Anthony Carreon. He visits his mother, Mayde Carreon, a parishioner of IHMC, for Christmas.  His mother largely influenced his moral calling, by the way she brought up her family: introducing the Church, Sunday masses, and exposure to a lot of her friends/priests, including Cardinal Vidal, that Anthony was groomed to become a priest, since he was four.

“LAND for them (referring to the Manobos and Higaonons) is not only life, but also it is a repository of culture, their ancestors are there.  Land is the repository of their faith, their beliefs, if they are dispossessed of their land, they are dispossessed of their culture.  They must have their land to preserve their culture, their environment, their local knowledge and systems of faith.” –  Fr./Dr. Randy Odchigue, 2011

Fr. Randy Odchigue hails from Butuan, a city in Agusan Valley and once the capital of Agusan del Norte.

Fr. Michael Perucho - Associate Pastor at Holy Family Catholic community in Glendale, CA

“POPE John Paul II notes an important aspect of love that is the bond that brings people together. It is a bond that is objectively good and it is through this bond of love that freedom is implied through the “discovery of an agreement or even an identity between the other’s good and one own’s good. The bond of love expresses the good of both people involved and in recognizing that the good of oneself is equally important to the good of the other makes this bond last as it is not formed out of selfish or egotistic reasons, but upon a recognized offering of oneself as a gift to the other.” – Fr. Michael Perucho, Living out the Imago Dei, 2011.

This story was handpicked by our publisher Cora Oriel, to be done for NAFP-USA. She read about Fr. Michael Perucho’s recent ordination as part of the first class of priests, ordained by the incumbent Archbishop Jose Gomez, succeeding Cardinal Emeritus Roger Mahony.

Fr. Florentino Santiago - Pastor at St. Eloi Catholic Church in Louisiana

WHEN Father Florentino Santiago was a young child in the Philippines, it was obvious what profession he was going to join when he grew up.

While most kids his age would run around and get into trouble, Father Santiago would “play mass with neighborhood kids using improvised materials like a banana and coke for bread and wine.”
