LOS ANGELES Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa appointed Melany Dela Cruz-Viesca as a member of the Human Relations Commission of the City of Los Angeles.

Victor Manalo: Mayor Pro Tem, City of Artesia, California

IN the recently concluded November 3 city council elections in the city of Artesia, Filipino incumbent Victor Manalo was re-elected, garnering the highest number of votes. He is also the elected Mayor Pro Tem. (Some cities do not have a position of Vice Mayor, but rather appoint a person from the city council to act as Mayor Pro Tem, who will act as Mayor in the absence of the actual Mayor.) Manalo was likewise elected by the city council members to be the next city mayor starting December 2010 up to Dec 2011.

Victor Manalo is a longtime Artesia homeowner and resident. He earned a Ph.D. in Social Work from the University of Southern California and is Assistant Professor in the School of Social Work at California State University, Los Angeles. He earned an M.S.W. from California State University, Long Beach and a B.A. from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He has over 20 years of professional social work experience working with children, youth, and families from recreational, after-school programs, and camps to group homes, work programs, and child protective services.

Delano Europa: First Filipino appointed Justice of the Peace

MORE than 16 years ago, Filipino Canadian Delano Europa became the first Filipino appointed Justice of the Peace in the Ontario Court of Justice in Canada.

A former a municipal judge of Solano, Nueva Ecija, Philippines, Europa appeared to have set his path in his homeland. However, unforeseen circumstances prevented him from fulfilling that role.

The first Filipino American to become a US Ambassador

Ambassador Michele J. Sison was nominated to her post by US President George Bush. Her father, Pablo Sison is originally from Pangasinan.

Sison is a career member of the United States’ Senior Foreign Service, Class of Minister-Counselor. She was confirmed by the US Senate as Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates on May 6, 2004 and sworn in by Secretary of State Powell on July 12, 2004. Prior to her appointment to the UAE, she served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of South Asian Affairs, charged with providing broad policy oversight of US relations with Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.
