HE serves as the Commission Vice President for the City of Los Angeles Board of Fire Commissioners.
FilAm Administrative Law Judge Casimiro Urbano Tolentino was appointed to serve as a member of the Los Angeles Fire Commission, a five-person civilian Board appointed by the Mayor and affirmed by the City Council, in September 2005.
The purpose of the LA Fire Commission is to develop an organization to effectively administer and manage the resources of the department, minimize the impact of disasters and other emergencies on life and property, provide an effective Emergency Medical Services System and an effective Fire Prevention and Public Safety System.
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa named Tolentino to the board because he "has a background that may come in handy as the panel deals with controversy involving racial and sexual bias in the [fire] department," according to an LA Times article dated in 2005.
Before Tolentino was appointed, the Los Angeles Fire Department had long dealt with controversy involving racial and sexual bias in the department.
"Equal opportunity is very important in the department," Tolentino said to the Times.
Tolentino previously served as the assistant chief counsel for the Department of Fair Employment and Housing.
Villaraigosa said Tolentino and the rest of the board members he appointed Andrew Friedman, nurse Jill Furillo, educator Genethia Hudley Hayes and housing developer Dalila Sotelo are "talented and dedicated Angelenos."
For the past three years, Tolentino has played a pivotal role as a member of the Fire Commission Board.
A long champion of diversity and Filipino-American rights, Tolentino has been a longstanding labor and civil rights lawyer.
