SAN FRANCISCO Mayor Gavin Newsom appointed Fil-Am Al Perez to the City’s Entertainment Commission.
Newsom appointed the long time community organizer Perez to the seven-member commission last December.
Upon being appointed, Perez told the Inquirer what a tremendous honor it was to be selected and that San Francisco is an ideal city to hold such a position because of its "diverse local culture, festivals, parades, community events, and lively night time entertainment."
"I am looking forward to serving our great city to ensure that the quality of life of neighborhood residents is respected as we continue to make San Francisco a dynamic and exciting place to live, work, and play," he told the Inquirer.
"Al is a bright individual who has a solid grasp on what’s important to the City," said Jason Chan, former mayor’s liaison to the commissions. "With his positive impact on the
Entertainment Commission, this world-class city will continue to have world-class entertainment."
Established in 2003, the San Francisco Entertainment Commission’s mission is to regulate, promote and enhance the field of entertainment in the city of San Francisco. The members of the commission are responsible for accepting, reviewing and gathering information to conduct hearings for entertainment-related permit applications.
Additionally, the Entertainment Commission plans and coordinates the provision of City services for major events for which there is no recognized organizer, promoter, or sponsor, according to its website.
For the past several years, Perez has been one of the leading Fil-Am organizers in the Bay Area. As President of the FilAm Arts Exposition, his organization has partnered with local Bay Area professional teams like the San Francisco Giants, Oakland Raiders, and Golden State Warriors to host a FilAm Heritage day to celebrate the Filipino community and culture.
He has also helped organize and raised funds to benefit the victims of the Typhoon Ondoy and Pepeng disasters in the Philippines.
Perez also serves on the Board of the Filipina Women’s Network.
