FIL-AM Angeles Carandang is an appointed member of the Planning Commission in Skokie, Illinois.
Appointed by Mayor George Van Dusen in 2005, Carandang is among the nine-member commission responsible for maintaining the Zoning Chapter of the Skokie Village Code, the Comprehensive Plan and reviews requests for Zoning Chapter text amendments, Zoning Map amendments, subdivisions, consolidations, public street and alley dedications and vacations, special use permits, site plan approval, and Comprehensive Plan amendments.
Carandang, better known in the local Skokie and FilAm community by her nickname, Jelly, is also a member of the Skokie Human Relations Commission. She was appointed in 1999 to serve in that position.
A long time community supporter, Carandang has been praised for her work as a member of the Skokie Festival of Cultures, a volunteer for the Skokie Public Library, and has been elected Treasurer of the Skokie Caucus Party.
She’s also heavily involved in the local FilAm community.
She is the Chairperson of the Illinois Chapter of the National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NFFAA). In 2005, Carandang chaired the Philippine Week Committee and created a committee in charge of a walkathon project, raising monies for the Philippine American Cultural Foundation (PACF), and the Unity Tree Fund for a community center.
She has also helped organize to raise money and other items for disasters in the Philippines.
She also coordinates medical missions to the Philippines yearly.
