FIL-AM Sofia Aragon is a member of the Washington Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs. Appointed on December 3, 2009 to a three-year term by Washington Governor Chris Gregoire, Aragon is the Vice Chair of the Health Committee.
The Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs mission is to improve the well being of Asian Pacific Americans by ensuring their access to participation in the fields of government, business, education, and other areas.
Commissioners are responsible for upholding the mission statement and to educate members of the APA community about laws that may affect them and to advise the governor, legislators, and state agencies about laws and how it may impact members of the APA community.
Aragon’s family immigrated to Seattle, Washington from Manila, Philippines when she was three years old in 1975.
She grew up in Seattle and earned a BA in Economics from the University of Washington and a BS in Nursing from Seattle University. After working in the health field, she then went on to law school, earning a juris doctorate from Loyola University - Chicago School of Law.
Aside from being a commissioner, Aragon is the Senior Governmental Affairs Advisor for the Washington State Nurses Association that represents over 15,000 registered nurses and nurse practitioners in the state.
Prior to this position, she was the Legislative and Policy Manager for the Community and Family Health Division at the Department of Health, according to her bio.
