Leo Felix Jurado: First Fil-Am President and Member of the Board of Nursing State of New Jersey

Leo Felix JuradoLEO-Felix Jurado made history in 2000 when he became the first Filipino American member of the State of New Jersey’s Board of Nursing.

From 2007-2008,Jurado held the post of President and currently, he is the Board’s Secretary/Treasurer. He is also the chairperson of the Department of Nursing, Division of Health and Natural Sciences, County College of Morris, Randolph, NJ.

An accomplished and outstanding educator, administrator, advanced practice nurse, community leader and an advocate for the profession, Jurado has been a nurse for more than two decades wearing multiple roles. He has taught in associate and baccalaureate nursing programs and held adjunct faculty positions at Fairleigh Dickinson University, Rutgers University and Passaic County Community College. He is also an NCLEX –RN reviewer. He has held positions in Nursing Administration at New Jersey hospitals.

Jurado got his BSN and BA English degrees from St. Paul University (magna cum laude) and MA, Delivery of Nursing Services from the New York University. He is currently a candidate for Ph.D.

Professor Jurado has written and published several articles in newsletters. He has been invited as a speaker nationally and internationally on topics such as Diversity in Nursing; Scope and Standards of Nursing Practice, Nursing Leadership, Critical Thinking, Men in Nursing and other topics related to nursing and cultural diversity.

He has also been the President of Philippine Nurses Association of America, Inc. since 2008.

Highly accomplished in his field, Professor Jurado’s dynamism and advocacy has earned him numerous awards from different prestigious organizations, namely:

  • Nurse Educator of the Year, Philippine Nurses Association of New Jersey, 1995
  • St. Paul University Outstanding Nurse Alumni in Education, 1998
  • Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, 2000
  • Nurse Excellence Award in Education, New Jersey State Nurses Association, 2002
  • Certificate of Appreciation Award as a Member of the New Jersey Board of Nursing in celebration with the 100th Anniversary of Nursing in New Jersey, 2004
  • CARE Excellence Award in Education, Philippine Nurses Association of America, 2004
  • Excellence award for exceptional leadership and extraordinary contributions to the Profession of Nursing, Institute of Nursing, 2004
  • Asian-American Leadership Award, Asian American Association for Human Services, 2006
  • Centennial Outstanding Paulinian Achiever Award, St. Paul University, 2007
