New Haven Councilmember
VETERAN educator Linda Canlas became a new member in the New Haven Unified School District earlier this month.
Canlas, a long-time Union City resident, received more than eight thousand votes to win a seat in the NHUSD in the Nov. 2 elections.
“Without a doubt, it has been an inspired journey,” wrote Canlas about her campaign on her website. “Being on the campaign trail has taught me a lot about our school district and our community. I heard your concerns, issues and priorities. I am eager to work with you to find practical and effective solutions – as a NHUSD Trustee.
Canlas has been an educator the past 29 years. She currently serves as principal of Faith Ringgold School in the Hayward Unified School District. She has also served as vice principal for two years and has taught for 19 years.
“I love being a teacher,” she wrote. “Whether I am helping a kindergartener master the alphabet, or teaching a fifth-grader about the U.S. Constitution, or mentoring a first-year teacher, I love teaching.”
She told the Union City Patch website that her goal is to balance the district’s budget and improve the students academically.
“Good schools define good communities. Our kids are successful because of our schools,” she told Union City Patch.
Canlas has also served on the NHUSD Strategic Planning Team, and co-chaired the School Site Councils at Alvarado Middle School, Delaine Eastin Elementary School and Cabello Elementary School. I was also a parent booster and head chaperone for the Logan High School Band and a volunteer for the LHS Drama Department, according to her bio.
