Cynthia Teves Ruehlig: Contra Costa County Board of Education Area 5 Trustee

E-mail Print

FIL-AM Cynthia Teves Ruehlig is an elected member of the Contra Costa CountyBoard of Education Area 5 Trustee. Ruehlig, a non-profit administrator and businesswoman beat incumbent Daniel Borsuk for the seat after garnering 60 percent of the total votes cast in the November election.

She said that her priorities are improving academic performance, providing career-oriented education to students in Contra Costa County, and maintaining fiscal solvency and “promote transparency and accessibility.”

“You, the public, will know that I serve as your representative,” she said. Ruehlig is a graduate of the St. Scholastica’s College in Manila, Philippines and California State University, East Bay.

During the 1980’s in the Philippines, Ruehlig participated in the People Power Revolution against President Ferdinand Marcos. She said that’s where she learned the importance of a democracy.

“It began at the voting booth and ended with the exile of a tyrant, President Ferdinand Marcos,” she wrote in her website. “I marched the streets of Manila shoulder to shoulder with nuns, teachers, students and street-vendors demanding that our voice be heard,” she added. “The crowd swelled into a two million Filipino peaceful coup d’etat that ousted Marcos.”

She immigrated to the US in 1995. She currently works at the Orin Allen Youth Facility and Children and Family Services.

“I will bring a unique point of view and a commitment to transparency and accountability,” she said upon being elected. “I will also provide diversity and balance to the Board to ensure equal representation for our changing demographics.”
