FEW months ago, the multi-awarded, Filipino-American Deputy Sheriff from the LA County Sheriff Department, Jose “Joe” Nanquil, received another award for his outstanding police work in Los Angeles. In recognition for his dedication and contribution to the field of Asian Gangs and Organized Crime, Deputy Joe Nanquil was awarded the 2010 “Hall of Fame Award” by the Asian Gang Investigators Association of California.
Deputy Nanquil has also a recipient of the following awards and achievements: Deputy of the Year in 2002, Star Employee in 2004 and the 2009 Los Angeles County Sheriff Department Annual Medal of Valor and Meritorious Conduct Award. The Valor Awards Program was established to officially and publicly recognize the exceptionally heroic acts performed by members of the LA County Sheriff Department, and the Medal of Valor, in particular, is the highest honor a member of the Sheriff Department can receive. A 20-year veteran of the LA County Sheriff department, Nanquil was honored with six other sheriff deputies who overpowered a kidnapping suspect and saved the lives of three hostages during a hostage drama in Brea in 2007.
A true-blooded Kapampangan, Joe Nanquil was born and raised in Santa Rita, Pampanga. When he was 13 years old, Joe immigrated to the US with his family. They lived in San Diego for a few months, before moving to Rowland Heights, then to Alhambra, and to Rosemead, where he finished high school.
Joe attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), Rio Hondo College, and DeVry, majoring in criminal justice. In 1989, at the age of 23, he was recruited by the LA Sheriff Department. Nanquil’s first assignment was the Pitchess Honor Rancho-East Facility, followed by stints at the North County Correctional Facility, Sybil Brand Institute, and culminating in the assignment at the City of Industry Station and its Asian Crimes Task Force.
Deputy Nanquil has worked as a Patrol Deputy, a Field Training Officer and Gang Suppression Task Force team member. Nanquil and his partners Deputies Ken Levy and Roger Flores work as Industry Station’s Asian Gang Suppression Team. This team is referred to as the “Industry Special Assignment Team.”
In giving Nanquil the Hall of Fame Award, the Asian Gang Investigators Association of California publicly recognized and honored the deputy’s commitment to curtail Asian gangs. Joe Nanquil has made well over 3,000 arrests of individuals involved in crimes ranging from murder to vandalism. Over 950 of those arrests involved Asian and Hispanic gang members, and over 800 of those arrests involved the use, possession, sales and manufacturing of illegal narcotics. Deputy Nanquil has also been involved in over 300 gang and narcotics-related Search Warrant operations.
