IN 2007, Fil-Canadian Flor Marcelino became the first Pinay and woman of color elected to the Manitoba Legislative Assembly in Canada. Two years later, she became the first minority in the Manitoba provincial cabinet.
She represents the New Democratic Party.
As a MLA, Marcelino is responsible for representing and expressing concerns on behalf of residents in her province.
She has also been appointed as the Minister of Culture, Heritage, Tourism and the Minister Responsible for Multiculturalism in 2009.
Prior to that post, she served as the Legislative Assistant to the Minister of Culture, Heritage, Tourism and Sport in 2008.
Marcelino was born in Manila, Philippines before immigrating to Canada in 1982. She lives in Winnipeg.
According to her bio, Marcelino worked as support staff at Red River College for 17 years until she became a small business owner and editor of The Philippine Times.
She is a very active member of the community. She has served on the board of Project Peacemakers, St. Stephen’s-Broadway Foundation, Broadway Disciples United Church and its international affiliate, Global Ministries. She also served on the Premier’s Economic Advisory Council for six years, according to her bio.
