A weekend of worship

Today, Saturday, April 27, St. Catherine’s is hosting a 70th Anniversary Multinational Celebration Mass led by Bishop Joseph Brennan at 2 p.m. which will include the procession of different ministries as well as a presentation of traditional national attires.

Afterward at 4 p.m., there will be a food bazaar complete with international cuisines and dances which precedes an English language vigil mass at 5 p.m.

On Sunday, April 28, there will be a host of special mass services including English mass at 8 a.m. and a special 70th Anniversary Bilingual Mass Celebration starting at 9:30 a.m. led by Filipino Bishop-elect Alex Aclan.

St. Catherine’s was established in 1949 by Monsignor John Hackett and was originally included the surrounding parishes of St. Bridget of Sweden Church in Van Nuys, Our Lady of Lourdes in Northridge and a wide expanse of St. Joseph the Worker in Winnetka.

The population boom in the San Fernando Valley in the 1950s caused the parish to divide and was eventually moved into the grand modern building it’s in today. The church was greatly damaged by the 1994 Northridge earthquake and underwent a year of repairs before it was deemed safe to enter.

In its 70 years, the church has endured multiple changes but the mission is still the same today: to be a community-centered service to its incredibly diverse parishonership.

St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church is located at 18115 Sherman Way, Reseda, CA 91335.
