President Duterte urges riders to promote road safety, support tourism development

Legazpi City, Albay — President Rodrigo Roa Duterte on Saturday, April 21, called on motorcycle riders and enthusiasts to promote road safety by being drug- and alcohol-free.

“Do keep in mind that it is not just purely an adventure when you are on the road. I ask you to promote road safety and observing traffic rules, wearing proper protection, and being — ito talaga: alcohol- and drug-free,” he said in his speech.

Duterte graced the 24th annual convention of National Federation of Motorcycle Clubs of the Philippines (NFMCP) held at Peñaranda Park, Old Albay district here.

The President, who is an avid big biker himself, reminded the riders regarding driving a motorcycle after alcohol intake.

“Tutal may mga security guards man diyan sa building, iwan mo na lang ‘yung motor mo. If you cannot take it, do not ride,” he said.

“It’s just a reminder because of course, as your friend and as your comrade, companion sa riding history ng ating bayan eh I love you all,” he further said.

He also discussed how affordable motorcycles have become, allowing everybody to buy one.

“Dito, pupunta ka lang ng casa, walang registration, wala lahat and we have to correct this: ibibigay ang motor sa iyo for as low as P2,000 a month, monthly,” he explained.

The Chief Executive likewise asked motorcycle riders to support the development of tourism industry in the country.

“While this pursuit enables you to travel… to other places, you may always take this as an opportunity to be a part of our collective responsibility to foster solidarity and progress in our communities,” he said.

During his speech, the President underscored that government is well on its way towards eliminating the social ills that hinder our country’s march towards progress.

He then sought for the riders’ proactive participation in nation-building by upholding peace and order, preserving national security and eliminating misfits in the society.

“Remember that your greater participation in our fight against illegal drugs, criminality and corruption is crucial to our goal of uplifting the lives of the Filipino people,” he said.

The President also told the attendees of the three-day convention to cultivate the values of camaraderie, brotherhood and mutual respect within your circle.

Meanwhile, Duterte said he has fired an undersecretary the other day.

He highlighted as well his strong stance against corruption, telling the audience that he cannot stop corruption but he is trying everyday.

“We are workers of government and we are mandated to serve the public. Then you have to be courteous and protect the money of the people,” he said.

With regard to the peace talks with the communists, the President encouraged the rebels to take advantage of the 60 days he has given for the talks to resume.

“If it succeeds, then I would like to thank God una and the Filipino people and the military and the police and — for their understanding,” he said.

He also gave assurance that the police and the military will be “nice to you.”

“But I will give you the complete freedom to move. Wala akong molestiyahin,” he said.

After his speech, the President inspected motorcycles that were displayed at the venue, such as Ducati, Harley-Davidson, Kawasaki, BMW, and Indian Motorcycle Philippines.
