OAKLAND — A popular co-owner of a Filipino restaurant was killed in a shooting Wednesday night, May 18 in an East Oakland neighborhood.

Jun Anabo, 39, co-owner of Lucky Three Seven, was shot dead by an unknown assailant as he was closing up for the day.

Lucky Three Seven is a popular restaurant and community hub at Fruitvale and Brookdale avenues. It is known for its G-Fire chicken wings, “XL” lumpia, juicy longganisa and other Filipino dishes. Customers often line up around the block to wait for their orders.

A friend said Anabo was closing up and was looking forward to his 40th birthday celebration on May 28. Anabo has an 11-year-old son.

Oakland police officers found Anabo shot when they responded around 9:45 p.m. to the 2800 block of Brookdale, the same block as the restaurant, police said. An ambulance took him to a hospital, where he died, police said.

Grieving family members, friends and customers set up a flower-filled memorial in front of the restaurant, which will remain closed until further notice.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for Anabo with expenses going to his son Kiah.

“Right now Kiah is in pain wondering why someone would take away his Papa from him. I wish I had an answer for him. All I could say is reference what my brother would say to him in situations like this. I believe my brother would tell Kiah that his life is so precious and the world needs positivity like him,” the page, set up by Anabo’s sister Analyn, reads.

“There is no need for funeral expenses, everything donated will go toward Kiah, his future, and my brother’s last wish,” it added.

The page, which had a $20,000 goal, has now raised over $107,000.

The restaurant reopened on Wednesday, May 25 and has a memorial for Anabo outside.

“He should still be here doing this,” Anabo’s cousin and restaurant co-owner Mark Legaspi told the crowd. “We’re not letting no one shut us down.”

The homicide is the 43rd of the year investigated by Oakland police. The CHP has investigated three fatal shootings that have happened on Oakland freeways.  Anyone with information may contact at 510-238-3326 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572. (With reports from Inquirer.net)
